Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy usually starts before 9 weeks and often improves by the second trimester. In most cases, it does not harm you or your baby unless you are unable to keep food or fluids down or begin losing weight. If diet and lifestyle changes are not enough to improve symptoms, your provider may recommend safe treatment options such as vitamin B6, doxylamine, or antiemetic medications.

How is bleeding during early pregnancy checked?

If you have bleeding early in pregnancy, your health care provider may perform a pelvic exam and ask questions about how much bleeding you have had, how often it occurs, and whether you are having any pain. Blood tests may be done to measure pregnancy hormone levels (hCG, a hormone your body makes during pregnancy) and check your blood type to see if treatment for Rh sensitization (a condition where your blood type may affect the baby’s blood cells) is needed. An ultrasound may also be used to help find the cause of the bleeding, though sometimes no specific cause is found.

When does miscarriage happen and what are the signs?

Miscarriage can happen during the first half of pregnancy, most often within the first 13 weeks. It occurs in about 15–20% of pregnancies. Signs and symptoms may include:

  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Cramping in the lower abdomen that may feel stronger than menstrual cramps
  • Passing tissue from the vagina

Some women may have light bleeding with little or no cramping and continue to have a healthy pregnancy. Other times, the bleeding and cramping may become heavier and lead to miscarriage.

What is an ectopic pregnancy and what are the risks?

An ectopic pregnancy happens when a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, most often in a fallopian tube (the tubes that carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus). It can cause pain and bleeding early in pregnancy. A serious risk occurs if the fallopian tube ruptures (tears open), which can lead to internal bleeding. Heavy blood loss may cause weakness, fainting, severe pain, shock, or even death, so prompt medical treatment is very important.

What help is available if I want to quit smoking and how can drug use affect my baby?

If you are pregnant and you smoke, tell your health care provider. They can help you find support and quitting programs in your area. You can also call the national “quit line” at 1-800-Quit-Now. Drugs or nicotine, when used after the baby is born, can be passed to the baby through breast milk.

Is it safe to take prescription or over-the-counter drugs during my pregnancy?

Some prescription medications are safe during pregnancy, while others may pose risks. If you become pregnant, talk to your health care provider before stopping or starting any medication.
