Shelly went above and beyond in working with a patient with Down Syndrome by taking time to connect with him while he was upset about getting a shot. First, they calmed him down in the lobby by talking about his love of wrestling, and she shared her knowledge and love for this as well, and there was a connection between them. This made him very happy as he went to get his shot, but he was still nervous and scared, although he had done this before. Shelly walked back with the permission of the patient and his mother to sit with him and talk to him to distract him for a bit from this shot. The patient grabbed her hand to hold it tightly and snuggled in close to prepare for this shot. Before he knew it, it was over and done, and he hugged her in gratitude. His mother raved about the experience to the entire clinic and talked about how this was an experience she and her family would never forget. They felt so appreciated and comforted by Shelly’s warmth and kindness.
