Food RX Market Trailer

At MyCHN, we pride ourselves on being a medical facility that takes care of the whole person. This means medical, mental, and dental. We have an amazing staff that makes these services available for our patients, but we also understand that there is more to caring for the whole person and this includes things like social determinants of health get in the way.

According to the CDC, Social determinants of health are nonmedical factors that influence the health of the public. This includes their environment, the conditions in which they grow, and much more. We recognize that one of these factors is food, and we’ve been tackling that for the past 5 years.

What is the Food RX Market Trailer?

Before we get into what the Food Market Trailer is, we must talk about the Food RX Partnership Program. Our Food Rx Partnership began with the Houston Foodbank on December 12, 2019. The goal is to assist patients with

  • A1c
  • Hypertension
  • High and Low BMI
  • Cholesterol

We recognized that it is especially important that patients with these conditions have access to healthy food options in their homes, and that is how the Food RX Market Trailer was born.

Patients with these diagnoses who indicate food insecurity are directed to our Patient Eligibility Specialists. Then, they are enrolled and given their Food RX Prescription card. This allows them to take advantage of our partnership with the Houston Food Bank to visit our Food Market trailer events. Our partnership with the Houston Food Bank has made this endeavor a success, and MyCHN and our patients are incredibly grateful for the partnership.

What You Can Expect

The Food RX Market Trailer event is held every 3rd Monday of the month. This gives our patients access to healthier eating options. Our first Food Market Event was at Tom Reid Library in Pearland, TX, with a total of 13 individuals. Since then, it has grown to an average of 95 individuals/families in a little over a year.

We have been privileged to have these events at the Pearland Chamber of Commerce, and we are expanding to Alvin this October 2023! We understand how much this resource is needed in the community and are happy and excited to lend a hand. We hope that we will soon be in Freeport and other locations.

If you want to be a part of the Food RX Partnership Program, feel free to contact MyCHN at 218-824-1480. Keep your eyes and ears glued to our website and social media for more Food RX Market Trailer events!
