The Art of Destressing

Life is a unique and long event for most of us. No two people share the exact same experiences, but we all share some of the same feelings. Happiness, sadness, enjoyment, fear, excitement, anger, and stress are feelings we have throughout our lives. They are brought on by events and situations that happen in our lives. Stress is one of the most common feelings we share, and sometimes it can feel a little hard to eliminate.

The Art of Destressing

Everyday events can add stress to our lives, and it’s easy to just stay in that stressed state. As you may already know, you don’t have to remain stressed out; destressing may be a little simpler than it seems. Destressing is an art and truly does require some skill. Whether you’re trying to get rid of stress from work or home, you must put some effort into getting to that final destination, “the stress-free you!” So, what do you need to do to master this art?

Acknowledge. Acknowledgment is always the first step, and it’s an important step. You need to realize that you are taking on a little more than your mind and body want, and you are stressed. Once you’ve come to terms with this, the next step would be to figure out how to destress. Steps to destress will be different for everyone, and this is what makes it an art. You need to realize what works best for you and what gets you to that peaceful place.

Destressing Techniques

Movement & Nature

Exercising may not be the first thing you think about when relieving stress, but it can be. Moving your body allows your mind to think about something else, and by doing this, you are actively destressing without knowing it. Try an at-home workout session, yoga, or just walk around and take in the nature around you; you’re sure to relieve your stress this way.

Get Creative

Our minds work in an interesting way. Relieving your stress can be as simple as immersing yourself in something you love to do. Paint a picture, color in a coloring book, write how you feel, doodle on a piece of paper, or make a meal you’ve always wanted to try! Get creative in some way and watch your body release some of that stress.

Connect & Unwind

We all need physical connection, whether we realize it or not. Connect with those you care about and unwind with them. You are more comfortable around family members and friends, and by connecting with them, you allow yourself to relax and unwind. So, reach out to those you care about and make plans to unwind with them.

Power Nap

There might be a lot of work waiting for you by the time you wake up, but a nap always helps. This is a great way to give yourself a fresh restart. By the time you wake up, your mind will be at ease, and you’ll be able to take on whatever task you have with fresh eyes. Only to take a 15 to 30-minute nap. If you take a nap longer than this, you’ll feel more tired than before, and that isn’t the goal. It’s time to take a nap.

Take a Deep Breath & Practice Self Care

Self-care looks different for everyone. No matter what it looks like for you, this can be a great way to destress. Grab a meal and watch a tv show, take a bubble bath and enjoy a glass of wine (or whatever you enjoy drinking), or indulge in skincare and give yourself a mini facial. Take a day or a couple of hours to care for yourself, and you’ll feel the weights come off your shoulders.

Talk It Out

Sometimes stress is a little more than you can handle, and even after practicing these techniques, you still feel stressed. If this sounds like you, talking to a therapist is a great solution. Sometimes you need to talk it out; having a professional walk you through the process can be much more helpful. MyCHN has therapy services available, and it’s easy to schedule an appointment. You’ll find yourself relaxing and bringing in peaceful vibes until you’re no longer stressed. Now it’s time to put these techniques into practice; go and master the art of destressing.
