Practicing a Safe, Healthy Halloween

It is time to get spooky! Halloween is right around the corner and promises a night of screams, scares, and candy. While the night is filled with festivities, it is crucial to think about how the whole family can have a ghoulishly good time while celebrating safely. Here are three tips you and your family can practice:

1. Wear your mask

Halloween masks may be spooky, but they are not a good alternative to a face cloth mask. Costume masks can be used as an alternative if there are more than two layers of breathable fabric. Moreover, people are not encouraged to wear a face mask on top of a Halloween mask as it may make it hard to breathe. When in doubt, Halloween-themed face masks are a good, safe alternative!

2. Hand out candy with distance and style

With the social distancing guidelines in place, it may be difficult to hand out candy to many kids. An excellent alternative to answering the door is making goodie bags with treats for children to grab. You can place the goodie bags on a blanket in a yard or a little way from your door. This way, you can stay safe and still hand out treats to everyone!

3. Consider doing other activities than trick-o-treating or large parties

While we all love to go out and get candy, it may be unsafe this holiday season given the circumstances. “Many children who have Covid can still spread the virus to other children, family members, or other immunocompromised individuals.” said Dr. Mohamed Zebda, Pediatrician at Community Health Network. It is important to avoid large social settings and opt for safer options such as spooky movie nights with household members, haunted forest trails, Halloween scavenger hunts, or virtual costume parties.

This holiday season, be sure to be aware of how you can enhance your celebrations to stay healthy and safe. By altering the way we celebrate Halloween, we can help reduce the number of COVID cases while still being spooky. That way, the only thing you have to be scared of is running out of candy!
