Men’s Hair Loss

It happens to everyone: hair loss. While hair loss typically occurs as one grows older, it can sometimes occur as early as your late teens. Hair loss is common among males; yet, it is a consistent source of shame for many. As Community Health Network’s Counselor, Jon Benefiel notices: “For a man, having a full head of hair can be related to virility and youth. When men begin to lose their hair, they may feel that this is signaling to them a decline in these areas and can consequently adversely affect their self-esteem and confidence. This can sometimes contribute to feelings of depression for males.”  While many males struggle with their hair loss, it is important to know there are options when navigating hair loss and balding.

  As mentioned, hair loss is common and can have a variety of causes. As the Mayo Clinic notes: “People typically lose 50-100 hairs a day,” however hair loss occurs when new hair fails to grow back. The source of hair loss often determines how fast balding, or hair thinning occurs. Gradual thinning on the top of the head is the most common type of hair loss and often occurs with aging. Other forms of hair loss range from patchy hair loss to traction alopecia.

There are options, however, to help slow down the process of hair loss, “fortunately, there are now treatments that can be very effective” (Benefiel). It is important to remember that hair loss is nothing to be ashamed about. Additionally, it should not prevent you from seeking help if you do want to seek out help. Be sure to talk to your health care provider for the best treatment options for you.
