Importance of Influenza Vaccination During COVID-19 Pandemic

The week of December 6-12th is national influenza vaccination week. This week is dedicated to reminding people of the importance of vaccinating against the flu. This year’s national influenza vaccination week is essential as we are living in the age of COVID. By getting vaccinated, many can save themselves the worry and stress of potentially having COVID—especially when they really have the flu. Thus, having a week dedicated to getting vaccinated keeps people from future worries and stressors.

These symptoms bear tremendous similarity to that of COVID-19; furthermore, the spread of the flu also follows a similar path. The flu can spread by infected people through coughing and sneezing. Once these droplets are released, they can pass through the nose or mouth of another person. People can also catch the flu by rubbing their mouth or nose after interacting with something that has the virus on it, such as doorknobs, tables, or an infected person’s hand.  

This winter, it is vital that people get vaccinated for the flu given the rise in cases of COVID. Healthcare workers and the system can be overwhelmed given the heavy burden of both the pandemic and flu season. The heavy burden on the health care system also increases the risks of more illnesses, hospitalizations, and death than regular flu season. Given the risk factors, it is important everyone is vaccinated against the flu to help protect others and the healthcare system.
