Explaining my decision to get the COVID-19 vaccine to my family members during the holidays was not as easy as I assumed it would be. First, they are scared or not well-informed regarding the vaccine and how it will help the current pandemic situation. Veronica Cavazos, Licensed Counselor, states how she would express herself and give reasoning behind her decision to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, “I would tell my family the reason I am getting the COVID-19 vaccine is the same reason I get the flu shot or the whooping cough shot, for prevention and safety. Not just for myself but for my family.” Here are a few ways you can start the conversation:
- Start by explaining why you decided to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Explain with as much detail and emotion as you can.
- Explain the trust you have in your primary care physician or doctor that recommended the vaccine.
- Highlight how the vaccine will allow the public, your family, your work, or yourself to do something enjoyable in public.
Here are a few pitfalls you should avoid falling into:
- Do not avoid their questions or comments. They are trying to find more information regarding the situation.
- Do not dismiss their fears or concerns. It is normal to have worrisome thoughts and feelings regarding a new medication or, in this case, vaccine, but you can route them towards a health authority such as the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
- Avoid topics that will bring fuel to the situation. For example, if a family memory or event brings divisiveness instead of unity, please avoid it.
- Provide information from health organizations such as the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and local health county.
Remember, you can share your experience with the vaccine and its side-effects as much as you want. At the end of the day, you are protecting your family, coworkers, and yourself.
