The month of November is Family Caregivers Month. There are thousands of family members whose responsibility is to take care of a loved one, who cannot take care of themselves any longer. This is a huge responsibility, and it is important that we honor these caregivers and show them the same support that they are giving. Â
At MyCHN, we are part of an age-friendly health system. This means that our facilities and the services we provide can take care of patients of any age. Health systems and other facilities like ours are great resources for caregivers caring for older adults. We want to be able to share other amazing resources that you, as a family caregiver, can use. Â
We also want you to take the time to honor and thank a family caregiver around you for the selfless deeds they perform daily. Â
Family Caregiver Resources in Texas
Family caregivers take care of loved ones with various disabilities. Dementia and Alzheimer’s are some of the more prominent ones. It’s essential that, as a caregiver, you are aware of all of the resources available to you in your area. Sometimes, this takes a little bit of research, but we’ve taken care of that for you. Â
The Texas Health and Human Services has a section dedicated to caregiver support and resources. (Click this link to visit the page now). Here, you’ll find support services, including contact information for providers, training, and educational resources. They state that the Aging and Disability Resources Centers in the communities have partnered with various organizations to help with chores, transportation, medication management, counseling, and much more. Check this site to find family caregiver resources in Texas. Â
MyCHN has partnered with the Alzheimer’s Association and the Age-Friendly System program to be an immediate resource for you. We have over 14 locations across southeast Harris County, Brazoria, and Galveston County. The Alzheimer’s Association has a 24/7 helpline and caregiver support groups that can be very useful. Additionally, MyCHN has in-person and virtual support groups that can assist the caregiver and the one receiving care.  Â
How To Celebrate A Family Caregiver
Because families are often the primary source of support for older adults with disabilities, it’s important to celebrate them. According to the AARP, more than 53 million family caregivers are not getting paid to do the work they do. It is because of this that November is used to honor. Here are some ways you can celebrate a family caregiver in your life.
