Empathy Champion's Story

A patient arrived in significant emotional distress, expressing fear and discomfort about sensations she was experiencing and sharing that she was currently homeless and felt unheard. Devon responded immediately with calm, compassionate support, taking the time to listen and validate the patient’s feelings without judgment. Recognizing the complexity of the situation, Devon collaborated with the medical assistants to help facilitate a dermatology referral to ensure the patient’s concerns were thoroughly evaluated. At the same time, Devon took proactive steps to reconnect the patient with psychiatric services so she could resume necessary medication. In addition, Devon provided resources to assist the patient with housing, addressing a critical social determinant impacting her well-being. Devon’s actions exemplify what it means to lead with empathy—she not only responds to patients’ immediate emotional needs but also works diligently to connect them with comprehensive support. Devon’s compassion, attentiveness, and dedication make a meaningful difference in the lives of both patients and colleagues.
