Confidence and self-esteem go hand in hand. Understanding this alone makes the difference when it comes to boosting one’s confidence. So, what can you do to boost your confidence? Random acts of kindness. We see people do it all the time, from opening the door for the people behind you to giving a homeless person food. These small acts of giving the play a role in boosting confidence.
Everyone has heard the phrase it’s better to give than to receive, and it’s true in this sense. The feeling you get when you receive a gift you want or a surprise gift from someone you care about is lovely. You can get the same feeling being the person on the other side of receiving. It’s all about the act, the feeling you get after it, and how it contributes to your overall mental health.
What’s The Science?
When someone is kind to you, what is your response? You may feel happiness and appreciation. Chemicals in your body are released and stimulate your brain to give you those feelings. These chemicals are called serotonin and dopamine.
Now let’s switch it. You actively intend to make someone’s day better by performing a random act of kindness. You know that it will release those same chemicals in their body and make them feel good overall. What does this do to you? Your brain is triggered to release these same chemicals because you are getting a satisfied feeling. You feel good making someone else feel good.
In addition to this, showing kindness increases oxytocin, a chemical that makes you feel connected and trusted. It also relaxes you by reducing cortisol, a stress hormone. If you’re not stressed or nervous about performing a kind act, your confidence to continue with your kindness increases. It’s that simple.
