Before the pandemic, the holiday season was a time to gather and celebrate. The recent pandemic, however, limited our ability to gather safely. This year provides many folks an opportunity to gather as restrictions are slowly being lifted. Although the gathering is vital for many people, one must ensure everyone stays safe while sharing space.Â
Most holiday parties are considered small gatherings. These gatherings are informal and may occur with family and friends with whom you socialize. Small gatherings typically do not involve long-distance travel and happen at someone’s residence. With this form of gathering, there are guidelines people can follow to encourage the health and safety of those in attendance. Â
- If you are not fully vaccinated and aged 2 or older, you should wear a mask in indoor public places. Furthermore, if in a crowded outdoor area, you should maintain 6 feet of distance from people.
- People who have a condition or take medications that weaken their immune system may not be fully protected even if vaccinated. These folks should continue to take all precautions recommended for unvaccinated people, including wearing a well-fitted mask.
- If you are vaccinated, wear a mask indoors in public to help maximize protection from the Delta variant and prevent its spread.
Even with these steps to help protect family members and friends, there are still safer options to a physical gathering. Consider having your meeting outdoors rather than indoors to help keep everyone safe. Also, have virtual gatherings to avoid overcrowding—especially if your space is poorly ventilated. With these steps, we can prevent the spread of COVid-19 and its variants.Â
It is important to recognize that attending large gatherings increases the risk of being in close contact with people who may have been exposed to COVID. If you get sick after attending, there are some steps you should follow as well. Â
- Get tested for COVID-19
- Know when to quarantine whether you’re vaccinated or unvaccinated
- Contact and inform those who were at the gathering with you.
No matter the size or attendees, it is essential to stay up to date with pertinent COVID information. By staying up to date, individuals are better equipped to maintain their safety and those around them. This holiday season is meant to raise the hopes and spirits of everyone. To fulfill this ideal, people need to continue educating and being safe to limit the spread of COVID. Be sure to visit the CDC website for more information and tips on how to stay safe this holiday season. Â
